Tacking through that pack of cards,
reasoning smartly their every lie.
Knowing where resistance is least,
is it North, South, West or East?
Going for the high game with logic and aplomb.
Understanding your partner without a smidgeon of doubt.
Gently chastising but never a complaint;
always so elegant, a true picture of restraint.
Players, your pupils once, have grown their card-playing skills,
finessing with all the confidence that they have learnt from you.
Now they double jump, just whenever they should
(something I ought to copy, and only wish I could !)
And so the years roll by - oh, so readily by.
It really is quite difficult for anyone to believe
that you have now reached your ninetieth year
with your purpose so firm, your mind so clear.
We thank you Dorothy, for your wisdom and skill,
for your patience and kindness to all you know;
and we look forward to more challenge in the months to come.
On with the game, once the deal is done!
