We started with a sheet that was somewhat hieroglyphic
and only too easy to hold upside down.
But it turned out to contain instructions specific
about where, and when and with whom to come.
We populated the Summer with sporting relays
and our hosts with cunning manipulated each team.
Despite the rain there were few cancellations or delays
except those caused by the gorging of cakes and cream.
What is there to say about the game?
The standard was too often appalling;
only one - perhaps two - players lay some claim to fame
and for the rest, our abilities seem to be falling.
But that is hardly the point, I hasten to add.
We have had a cracking good time on each occasion.
Another year finished now, it’s rather sad
as we turn to activities of a different persuasion.
So a heartfelt thankyou to Peter, Andrew and Peter
for entertaining us so generously, more than once for some,
and if there is ever a better hostess I have yet to meet her,
so to Elisabeth, Heather and Lorraine, our hearts you have won.
